What Is a HEIC File?

A HEIC file is a photo saved in Apple's High Efficiency Image format. It wraps the picture in the HEIF container and compresses it with HEVC, so the image keeps its quality while taking far less space than a JPG. Every iPhone and iPad has saved photos as HEIC by default since iOS 11.

TL;DR

HEIC is Apple's space-saving photo format. Convert it to JPG or PNG to open and share it anywhere on Windows.

Why Apple Moved to HEIC

HEIC is Apple's adoption of the HEIF standard from the MPEG group. The goal was practical: fit more photos on the same phone. HEVC compression packs the image tighter than the decades-old JPEG codec, and the container can also hold extras a single JPG cannot, such as Live Photo motion, depth maps, and a burst of frames in one file.

On an iPhone you can switch back to JPG under Settings, Camera, Formats, Most Compatible. New shots become JPG, but photos already saved as HEIC stay HEIC until you convert them.

Will Windows Open a HEIC File?

Not on its own. Windows 10 and 11 show HEIC only after you add the HEIF and HEVC codecs from the Microsoft Store, and many older editors, websites, and email clients still reject the format. That is why the safe move before sharing or uploading is to convert the file to JPG or PNG.

A HEIC photo can carry an embedded thumbnail in a different format. If a program shows the thumbnail but will not open the full image, the file is fine, the app simply lacks HEIC support.

How to Open and Convert a HEIC File

The reliable route is a batch converter that turns a whole camera roll into standard images in one pass, with the original quality kept.
